Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was a dream of Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (AMMA), a humanitarian leader, who gave it a modest beginning in a village called Ettimadai in the Coimbatore district back in 1994. The college got recognized as a University in a UGC Act in 2003. At present, the University runs 5 Campuses, and offers more than 150 courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.
The Campuses cover major cities and towns of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka: they exist in Coimbatore, Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Kochi and Mysuru. It thus provides a chance to the population of those areas to get the opportunity of gaining a higher education in all fields. The courses provided are extensive with a high amount of focus on research and development of both theoretical as well as practical knowledge. The courses are offered in the fields of Journalism, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Engineering, Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Education, Visual Media Studies, Communication, Ayurveda, Business, Dentistry, Nanosciences and Social Work, amongst others.
The University has been recognized by many councils and given an 'A' Grade by NAAC. The campuses have all major facilities and infrastructure for co-curricular activities for an all-round development. Amrita University has a collaboration with top universities of US and Europe including some of the Ivy League universities for various student exchange programs. Amrita has been ranked in the top 200 universities in the QS BRICS University ranking and also within the rankings of the Times Higher Education World University.
