Private University Estd. 1952 NIRF #1 (Medical) 2024Indian Maritime University established in 2008 through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) as a Central University, is poised to play a key role in the development of trained human resource for the maritime sector. The main aim of the university is to facilitate and promote maritime studies, training, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and also to achieve excellence in these and connected fields and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, to promote advanced knowledge by providing institutional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and to make provisions for integrated courses in Science and other key and frontier areas of Technology and allied disciplines in the educational programs of the University.

Placement
CHENNAI: The string of controversies at Indian Maritime University (IMU) has taken its toll on its admissions too. Less than 50% of the seats are filled in most courses, and an MBA programme in Port and Shipping Management at the Cochin campus got just two students. They have now been moved to the Chennai campus.
The central university, founded in 2008 for specialised research and training programmes in maritime education, seems to have foundered early. IMU has more than 5,000 students studying in its six campuses around the country, and around 500 on the Chennai campus.
At a time when advanced law programmes are sought after in other national universities, the LLM in maritime law at the Chennai campus has few takers. "When the programme started two years ago, we had 17 students. Seven dropped out due to lack of teachers. Of the 10 students who enrolled last year, three left. This year, there are just five students," said an IMU official. The course, with a fee of 4 lakh for two years, has 30 seats.
Until last year, most courses were taught by lecturers on contract. Appointment of qualified full-time faculty, completed early this year, was cancelled by the management. The university's senior executive council member and former vice-chancellor of Anna University N Kalanidhi said, "Core functions of IMU have not been effectively performed, thereby affecting the quality of education and students' career prospects."
The BTech marine engineering has a sanctioned strength of 80, but there are less than 40 students this year. "The course was to be completed by July but the university is yet to schedule exams. I paid 8 lakh for the four-year programme. We got a raw deal as there are no trained teachers," said a student, who finds his marine engineering dream at stake since there are no signs of placements.
IMU does not have a placement cell to secure jobs for its students. The nautical science programme with a sanctioned strength of 80 students and an annual fee of 2.5 lakh has found jobs for less than 10 students this year. "We have sent numerous mails to the university authorities for our degree and mark statements, but there's no response from the VC's office," said a student who passed out two years ago.
Research programmes have not taken off either. "Programmes on maritime resources, oil and minerals, marine biological conservation, maritime borders and changing equations, climate impact and sustainability studies remain a dream," said a senior faculty member. Vice-chancellor Mukesh Baveja was not available for comment.

The Campus has an excellent infrastructure which includes airy, well lit classrooms, a well stocked Library, Hi-tech Computer lab, Faculty Room and a well defined parking lot for students, faculty and visitors. The college has well-equipped computer lab with broadband Internet connectivity and a host of required software. Well-equipped fashion lab with sophisticated stitching & over locking machines and pattern cutting tables. Latest software and computer systems in the Creative Departments. Well Qualified Full Time Faculty for all Streams.
Library
The college has a well equipped and well stocked library. The college has Library cum reading room, well equipped with periodicals, text books, study material, major dailies and popular magazines for both students and faculty.
