Department of History, University of Gauhati came in to existance to impart quality education and to encourage historical research. Emphasis is also on imparting a disciplined value-based education. Its long-term mission is to make the Department a Centre of Excellence. Its aim is to to impart quality and value-based education to the students and encourage historical research. The long- term mission is to make the Department a Centre of Excellence in respect of North-Eastern regional research with specific focus on Assam. With that aim in view, students are encouraged to take up research projects on different aspects of North-East Indian history. Although the focus is on regional studies, we do not encourage regional studies in isolation. Its course is designed in such a manner so as to provide an in-depth study of the history of our country in a global setting.
