Zoning out

All the hype surrounding the college admissions has really gotten to me. I never thought that escapist was a word that could be used to describe me. But at this instant, I am labelling myself ‘Escapist’ in huge scarlet letters. Why and how did I reach this rather unsettling conclusion about myself? I shudder to think about that fateful day.

30^th June. A day like any other, a day that started with the mellifluous chirping of birds at the crack of dawn and ended with a crescent moon that adorned the starry sky at night. A perfectly normal day for approximately six billion nine hundred ninety nine million eight hundred thousand of the seven billion individuals that reside on the earth, but a short visit to hell for about 2 hundred thousand others-the distraught DU aspirants. (I did the math, seriously!)

So yes, the cutoffs were released and everyone was instantly and animatedly discussing (and dissing) them-I was in on the action too. For about two hours I was all agitated. And then gradually, all emotion wore off. I got busy watching Franklin and Bash on Television-it is a legal comedy drama, I had never previously bothered to watch. Apparently, I was so hooked that I could not breathe easy until I had done a marathon T.V (in this case laptop screen) session. By the time I got to the finale of the first season, I was so exhausted that no thoughts of college cutoffs crossed my mind as sleep engulfed me.

My marathon T.V session is basically a mellow version of Devdas drowning his sorrow in 95% ethyl alcohol (yes, I am currently addicted to percentages and yes I haven’t already forgotten the chemistry I learnt in school).

I don’t want to confront my fears. The frightening reality that perhaps my dream of becoming a writer will always remain that-a dream- is overwhelming. It will be far easier for me to take the simple route-go do engineering- my choice of course at my choice of college. But what about the path less traveled by….

P.S- Btw, considering the number of people that applied for English, it is not really a road that less traveled by…! :P
