Word of the Day ~ Nemesis

As you still have days and weeks to go till the College Admissions end and you get a confirmation for a seat, you will be whiling away your time, so why not indulge yourself in some useful hobby?

As a blogger, I have always yearned for a regular follow up blog which would be interesting, fun and of course lively. As I was thinking of some theme, I landed upon Etymology. Not that I am an expert or I am going to bore you with incessant details, but quirky words have always intrigued me. Besides their origin and meaning, I am especially interested in the usage and deployment of words in various situations.

Like for instance – Trial. Trial as in Sports Trial and Trial as in court hearing are different. Like Gross as in horrible and gross as in gross profit (without deduction of tax, I am still a Commerce Student!), they both are two distant ends of a stick.(These are homophones, by the way)

Nemesis

I think we better follow a simple process; proceed by step to step; warding off any confusion.

So, here I go:

Word of the Day:      Nemesis

Meaning:                   Something’s Downfall (Ruin), Enemy, Retributive Justice

Usage:                       It is commonly used as a noun; it is usually placed in an eye catching spot, which will likely be noticed by a casual reader.

Where did I discover it?

Ummm... The first time I noticed this word was in Agatha Christie’s novel named Nemesis itself. The first time I saw it, I was mesmerised by the title; short and sweet, yet captivating.

In it, Aunt Jane Marple declares herself to be Nemesis (In fact, it was in another novel where she declares herself to be Nemesis, but this one entirely revolves around her being Nemesis). She is a medium of retributive justice; getting a boy out of prison proving that he didn’t do the murder he was accused of; retrospecting to about 10 years or so.

Nemesis, how cool it sounds! Doesn’t it?
