Nowadays, if you walk up to a student and ask them what job they wish to pursue, or what subjects they plan on taking, you’d often hear them say, “I plan on becoming an engineer” or “I plan on taking science.”

If not those, you’d maybe hear that they want to act, dance, or sing, or they want to work in an NGO to help improve our country’s image. Or maybe they’re just unsure.

Whether this is due to parental pressure, more lucrative opportunities or simply personal preference varies from person to person.

But I want to be a journalist.
Funny thing is, I am actually quite comfortable with the sciences. I love working with computers, I enjoy questions relating to physics, mathematics isn’t a struggle and chemistry is exciting.

“Why on earth, when you have such an advantage in such fields, would you want to be a journalist?”, you may ask. “You could be an engineer! A programmer! So many good fields! You could earn so much!”

Well, the reason is quite simple. I find the idea of working as an engineer boring, a programmer tiresome, and journalism interesting.
I like to learn about new things, inquire, ask, dig deeper for more facts, understand things, then bore other people with the information.
I like to write. Be it stories, reports, articles or even slogans, writing is something that stretches my mind, makes think creatively,

Most importantly, to keep people informed. I’ve often turned to the news, and seen some completely irrelevant and, well, silly things being reported. I see stories about movie stars being divorced; see religious fanatics go crazy over idols of gods drinking milk, and of whatever is trending on the internet.
Never mind the riots in Ukraine, the conflict in Syria, the important thing is, did the TV serial protagonist finally win over his lady love or not?

I may be an idealist, but through my position as a journalist, I would constantly learn about new discoveries, new innovations. It would keep my interest; it would make me enjoy each day’s work.

In the end, that’s what one really wants from whatever job they take, isn’t it? They want it to be something they can look forward to every day, something they can enjoy, so that it isn’t work, but fun.

That is why I want to be a journalist when I start working. Or being a computer programmer works too. After all, it’s always good to have a backup, isn’t it?
