Indian Air Force (IAF) has invited applications from adventurous men & women to join the IAF as commissioned officers in flying (short service commission) in Flying Branch, technical & ground duty branches for permanent & short term commission via Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) entrance exam.
Through the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), Indian male & female citizens can apply for courses commencing in July 2015, for grant of short service commission in the Flying Branch. Eligibility Criteria for AFCAT 2014
Age and Education:
- Candidates must be between 19 and 23 years of age, as of July 1, 2015
- Should be a graduate with at least 60% marks from a recognised university and have studied Maths and Physics at 10 + 2 level
- BE / B Tech degree (Four year course) from a recognised University with minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together.

Physical standards:
- Height: A minimum of 162.5cm, with correlated weight
- Leg length: Between 99cm and 120cm
- Thigh length: A maximum of 64cm
- Sitting height: Between 81.5cm and 96cm
Vision:
- Minimum visual acuity is 6/6 in one eye, and 6/9 in the other, correctable to 6/6 only for Hypermetropia.
- Candidates should not be colour blind or have night blindness.
- LASIK Surgery for correction of vision is admissible in the Transport and Helicopter streams only if the following conditions have been fulfilled at the time of Air Force medical examination:
1. The surgery must not have been carried out before the candidate was 20 years of age
2. The axial length of the eye should not be more than 25.5 mm as measured by IOL master
3. At least 12 months should have passed after an uncomplicated, stable surgery, with no history or evidence of complications.
4. The post LASIK corneal thickness, as measured by a corneal tachymeter should not be less than 450 microns.
5. Those with high refractive errors (greater than 6D) are not eligible.

Application Process 2014 for Short Service Commissioned Flying officers at IAF:
Eligible Candidates can apply online at the official website of IAF by going to the ‘career’ tab and clicking on “Candidate Login”, and following the instructions given.
Types of Commission:
1. Short Service Commission - Those who join the Flying Branch will have a commission of 14 years from the date of commissioning. This is not extendable.
2. Permanent Commission – Candidates joining as Permanent Commission (PC) officers would continue to serve till the age of superannuation.
Selection procedure:
Candidates who are short listed on the basis of AFCAT will be called for further testing at an Air Force Selection Board.
The testing would be conducted at Dehradun, Mysore, Gandhinagar or Varanasi.
There will be three stages of testing:
Stage-I: Intelligence testing, among others. This is a screening test. Candidates will have to show requisite documents to prove their eligibility for the applied branch. Any candidates who fail to pass will be sent back.
Stage-II: Over the next five days, Psychological and Group testing will be conducted, as well as an Interview.
Stage-III: The Pilot Aptitude Battery Test(PABT) will be administered to eligible candidates.
