Useful Tips by CAT 2013 Toppers

Several engineering students have successfully cracked the previous editions of the Common Admission Test (CAT). This year’s CAT results, which were announced last week, reflected a similar trend with some of the toppers scoring above 99 percentile. Two of CAT 2013 toppers have now spoken about their success mantras.

For Krishna Pillutla who scored 100 percentile, it was all about identifying his strengths and weaknesses and working towards dealing with the latter. “To crack CAT, strengthen the strong areas you can bank on. The fact that I prepared for the GRE also made it easy,” says Pillutla.
Sharing another tip, Pillutla says that you should practice to get better and find out where you are going wrong. “Do not think too much on the test day. Keep calm and go with the flow. If you are not well prepared but if you are calm, you will do well but if you are well prepared but lose your composure, you are more likely to make mistakes. I took separate tests meant for different sections instead of the full three-hour tests while preparing,” says the IIT Bombay student.

Akshita G, who works as a product manager with a Bangalore-based firm, says that though she started preparing late for the test, she ensured that she took a number of mock tests.

“I focused on the basic concepts of Math and took a number of mock tests. I was sure of a good show in the verbal section and scored 99.99. My preparation for the logical reasoning section was strong too,” says Akshita who scored 99.77 percentile.

Talking about how she approached the test on the D-day, she says, “You must figure out in 30 seconds if you can solve a particular question. Do not think too much if you didn’t do well in one section because you can always do well in the others and improve your overall score,” she adds.
