The rigorous preparations of many Civil Service aspirants bore fruits as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared their final results for 2013 on Thursday. Of 3,23,949 students who had appeared for the preliminary exam, only 14,959 students qualified for the final exams which were held in December last year.
Gaurav Agarwal from Jaipur secured the first position. Agarwal holds an engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur and a post-graduate degree in management from Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Lucknow.
This was Agarwal’s second attempt at the civil services. He had last year qualified for the Indian Police Service for which he is currently undergoing training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.
“I am very happy about the result. I had secured the 244th rank in 2012 but could not make it to the IAS. I revised my strategy for my preparation and my efforts paid off,” Agrawal said.
Munish Sharma, who scored the second position, is a Delhi boy who had completed his g raduation from DU’s Sri Venkateshwara College. A graduate in biochemistry, Sharma hit silver in the UPSC exams in his second attempt.
“I am overwhelmed by the results and I owe my success to the blessings of my teachers and to my mother. I worked really hard to clear the exams and the results stand proof to this,” he said.
Many other aspirants from the Capital made it to the hallowed list. The residential coaching academy — an initiative of Jamia Milia Islamia’s Centre for Coaching and Career Planning - saw 12 of its students passing the exam. The academy trains men and women from economically weaker backgrounds and other backward classes.
“Since the students here are selected on the basis of an entrance test, there was always a healthy competition which encouraged me to perform better,” said Mohammad Saim, a student of the academy who secured the 775th rank.
The academy offers free coaching and residential facilities to bright aspirants who find it difficult to pay for their coaching expenses. Faiz Aq Ahmed Mumtaz, who had was trained in the academy, bagged the 17th rank. Another student, Sana Akhtar secured the 90th rank.
“These students were selected on the basis of an all India written test followed by individual interviews,” read an official release by the academy.
Unlike the previous two years when women came first, this year the topper among women, Bharti Dixit, secured the fifth rank. She is a graduate from Delhi’s Lady Handinge Medical College and cleared the exam in her first attempt.
Over 1,122 candidates have been recommended for appointment in Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), Indian Police Services (IPS) and other central services based on the 2013 results, read the statement released by the Ministry of Personnel on Thursday.
