The big war is about to begin – whether to choose a good course or go for a good college? Year on year this debate heats up, leaving the kids confused. This of course happens as soon as the students fail to secure a place in the subject of their choice; making them double-minded on ways to polish their career. While the pressure to sustain oneself as a leader clogs their minds, it is always advisable to choose a course over a college. Some students are also hit by the fear of not taking the right decision about the course that interests them the most even after giving their board examinations. This is when they tend to follow the footsteps of the friends and peers without realizing their potential of clearing the course with flying colours. It is therefore the role of the parents to guide them through by not pressuring their kids and instead help them.

The following tips can come to your rescue if you too are caught in that road block:

KNOWLEDGE IS SUPREME

Before taking any decision about the course that you plan to choose, make sure to be aware about the various courses that are open to you across several colleges and universities. Every year, new courses get added in universities and private institutes. These get neglected by the students due to lack of publicity. It is also important for the reluctant students to not to ignore the passions that you have inculcated during your school days. Sometimes these can help you choose a course and make a career out of it. Remember, it all depends on your skills and that is what can pull the lever in your favour.

IDENTIFY YOUR SKILLS

Every child is equipped with certain skills. For some, these are easy to identify while others find it difficult to trace them easily. Before you make a decision about any course, keep your personal skills in mind. Give yourself some time after analysing the list of available options. Sometimes, we tend to ignore the basic qualities that we nurture during the school days and these turn out to be vital in building your career path. You can also think out of the box while choosing a career. For instance, your good speaking skills can play a pivotal role in choosing a course media or journalism.

CONSULT COUNSELLORS

Counselling can be really helpful in deciding your path. Several universities and private consultants help in providing professional counsellors to the students to help them guide through the series of courses and help in making the right decision. Counsellors are also provided for the students who plan to study abroad. Their role lies in advising the kids about the universities and colleges abroad and providing them substantial information regarding the courses and scope of a particular course. Counselling is also perfect for those kids who are stuck between multiple courses but fail to choose the right one.

PLAN YOUR FUTURE

What you choose at present has a direct impact in deciding your future, so plan carefully. Choose a course that gives you a freedom to establish your career carefully. Don’t pick something which can cause hurdles in expanding yourself on the professional front. Many students at times in hurry apply for a subject because of peer pressure or without realising the fruitfulness of the same in the future. Keep certain points - the scope of the course, the institutional benefit and the growth of industry in mind while deciding your career options. Do not get stuck with the question of ‘what next’ after you graduate.

PREPARATION IS ESSENTIAL

For any course you apply, make sure you prepare well in advance. Many professional courses like engineering, journalism, law, fashion designing, BBA, etc chose candidates on the basis of an entrance test. To crack these with flying colours, it is essential to gain adequate knowledge about the subjects that would be addressed in the entrance. Resort to adequate reading material, newspapers and other course-related books. Create your own notes and other hand-written materials to kick start your preparation. You can also take advice from those who have either prepared those exams or cracked their code.

RESORT TO PRIVATE COACHING

Some courses have categorised the question paper dividing the paper into several sections - general English, aptitude, reasoning, mathematics and general knowledge. Since the format of the paper remains more or less similar, private coaching can come to your rescue. Many institutes and coaching centres provide necessary course material pertaining to the questions that are asked in the entrance examinations. They not only prepare students by giving lectures but also conduct mock tests from time to time to fimilarise the pattern of questions.
