Study of Gemmology at B N College, Patna

Gemmology is a one year Certificate Course introduced as 'Add-on' under career oriented scheme in B.N. College, Patna which has been accorded by UGC in 2012.

Gemmology as a subject of study deals with gemstones. The practitioners i.e. gemmologists identify sort out and grade these stones. Gemmology is concerned with the scientific study of gems dealing with the occurrence , phys cal properties and identification of natural and synthesis gems. It is of great importance to traders, dealers and anyone who fascinates and appreciates gems for their beauty and ornamental value.

In the course it contains interaction and onsite training of the students for skill development. Employment is not at all problem for skilled persons. Since there is a heavy demand for persons skilled in gemmology, the students may opt for certificate course in Gemmology during the period of parallel study.

Selection procedure:

Admission to one year certificate course in gemmology will be made on the basis of a written entrance test followed by a viva voce conducted by the department/ college. The test will be of multiplechoice/objective/subjective type of questions from the syllabus of the intermediate / 10+2 course of Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Statistics Geology Mathematics and elementary knowledge of computer.

The duration of the examination for admission shall be of two hours.

Admission procedure:

• Candidates seeking admission to one year certificate course will be required to have passed the Intermediate Science examination with a minimum of 45% marks from any University /Intermediate Board or Council established

• The admission to one year certificate course (add-on) in Gemmology shall be from among the students admitted in undergraduate level (B. Sc Hons.) of any college of the Patna University

• The Admission will be made on the basis of merit list prepared after the entrance test which will include written and viva voce examination to be conducted by the Department of Geology, B.N. College, Patna University

• The reservation of the seats for the course shall be as per Rules of the state government applicable in Patna University, Patna, Bihar
