With the admission process on roll, students who excelled in sports in school are also busy filling individual college forms for admission through the sports quota.
“Though I scored 88.75 per cent in the science stream, I am more interested in the sports trials. I have won many zonal and inter-zonal badminton competitions during school,’’ said Nikita Wadhwa, a DU aspirant.
This year, the Delhi University has, for the first time, introduced centralised sports trials for the students seeking admissions through sports quota.Students are keen to know about the various activities offered by different colleges.
Gone are the days when badminton, cricket and football were the only games offered by colleges. Today, colleges are offering games such as equestrian, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, golf, squash, polo, pistol and rifle shooting, boxing and mountaineering.
“By providing such a large number of activities, it becomes easy for the students to get an activity of their choice,’’ said M.P. Sharma, associate professor, Physical Education, Hansraj College.
The sports quota admissions will depend upon both the certificates and the field trials. Seventy five per cent weightage will be given to the achievements of the candidate's best performance of the last three years and 25 per cent to the field trials.
The colleges also consider students who have excelled in particular sports, whether international or national.
“We do think about the students who have participated in golf, equestrian events and squash at national or international level,’’ said Meenakshi Pahuja, associate professor, Physical Education, Lady Shri Ram College.
There are many colleges offering such activities. For instance, Lady Shri Ram offers 17 sports activities including archery, chess and judo. Similarly, Hansraj College also offers around 14 activities that include diving and polo.
“All the activities that come under the Indian Olympic Association will be considered,’’ said Sudarshan Pathak, coordinating director of Sports Council.
