According to the Wikipedia page, A graphic designer is a professional within the graphic design and graphic arts industry who assembles together images, typography, or motion graphics to create a piece of design. A graphic designer creates the graphics primarily for published, printed or electronic media, such as brochures (sometimes) and advertising. They are also sometimes responsible for typesetting, illustration, user interfaces, web design, or take a teaching position. A core responsibility of the designer's job is to present information in a way that is both accessible and memorable.

Communication lies at the heart of a graphic designer’s job. While their duties may involve extensive work with images, unlike artists they do not produce “art for art’s sake.” Graphic designers must get across a specific message and call-to-action or emotion based on their client’s objectives. For instance, a graphic designer may be tasked with creating a brand or logo that makes a lasting impression on consumers, incorporating a unique shape or color scheme.

A good graphic design team is of utmost importance in any creative organisation. After accomplishing one's education in the design field, one can opt to be a graphic designer for an ad agency, media company, corporate etc.

1. Learn

There are various short term courses in graphic designing , full time courses in communication design, degrees and under-graduate courses as well. Moreover , practical knowledge over theoretical knowledge is a must too. One must gain enough work expertise in the field to assure being considered as a good graphic designer.

2. Upgrade Your Skills & Creative Spark

Graphic design is a field that is quickly growing, both creatively and technically, and while it is easy to get caught up in learning new technical skills and always wanting to upgrade to the best methods and techniques, it is just as important to focus on improving and pushing the limits of our creativity.

One must always, continuously opt to learn and upgrade from a creative environment - at your university, design school, work environment and surround themselves with inspiration and engage in activities that help foster and further enhance one's creative spark and also help in their understanding of effective design.

3. Join & Be Active in the Design Community 

As a freelance designer, joining the online design community is a must. Not only does it keep you updated on the happenings in the design world, but also great for feedback and critique. Being your own boss is great, but not having anyone to answer  to as a freelancer also has its down sides. No one to help you improve by rectifying your faults.

4. Create Your Own Projects

Whenever possible in your free time, create fake projects. Create a fake brand for a company. Design it's logo, stationary, brochure , website - go all the way , the whole nine yards. It's good to do this once in a while because it keeps design fun and lets your creativity run wild without any restrictions.

5. Redo Other People's Designs

This could help evaluate what they did wrong or what you could've done better.

6. Intern and/or Get a Job - Get Hands-on Experience 

Always choose to intern after or during your course in graphic designing so as to get professional work experience in the field.

7.  Be Passionate

This goes without saying, that if you're passionate about design, creating good design and enjoying the process - you will tend to be excellent at what you undertake.

8. Create a Portfolio

In addition to needing one if you ever want to get real work, putting together a portfolio challenges you to make critical judgments of your own work. Which pieces are your best and why? Which ones don’t make the cut? Is there a theme – and if so, can you play it up in the portfolio? If you want to work digitally, showcase your portfolio on a website. This will also make it easier for you to approach prospective clients and companies.
