With the first cutoff list finally being declared late on Monday night, colleges and the university have only one suggestion for all aspirants — take admission in the first available colle ge and course.
“Students who have made it through to the university should take admission in the first list only. There is no point waiting for a second list as you never know how many seats get filled,” said Rajendra Prasad, principal, Ramjas College.
Experts believe it is best to secure a seat in a course of your choice in the very first list, even if you haven’t made it to a college of your choice. They say a college of your choice may not come out with a second list at all.
“There is no reason to miss out on the first list. Taking a risk is not advisable. Students can easily migrate to another college of their choice if they manage to make it in the second list. No fee is deducted for this,” said a senior DU official.
According to Delhi University rules, a college has to return the original certificates of any student who wants to withdraw his/her admission within 24 hours. The fee is also refunded within a week’s time.
University experts warn students against taking unnecessary risks with the admission process.
“There is no harm in taking admission to colleges in the first list. There are only 54,000 seats in the university and there are more than double the number of applicants. Yet a huge rush is seen for only a handful of colleges and courses. Second lists in BCom (honours) and economics (honours) are usually rare. In case you don’t get the college of your choice, always pick the course that you want,” said a senior university official.
Admissions under the first list started on Tuesday and will go on till July 3. Admissions to DU colleges is not on the firstcome-first-served policy and all students who make the cut-off will be given admission regardless of the number of seats a college has.
But students who were eligible to take admission under the first list but decided against the option are not guaranteed admission in the subsequent lists unless they have a convincing argument.
“Unless they have a convincing story, we do not entertain students who could have taken admission in the first list but come in after the subsequent lists are released. If you want a course in a particular college, make sure you take admission in the first list,” said an official at Lady Shri Ram College for Women.
