What are the possibilities that come to your mind when we say good career choices? Doctor, engineer, teacher, manager, president, secretary and other such conventional preferences right? Let us introduce you to something totally different… How about being a scuba diving instructor? Offbeat careers are at an all time high right now, with more and more students/ professionals opting for a change in their career courses.

Surprised! Well, if you love the seas and oceans and can spend hours at length in water, consider this as an option. If you are fun-loving and yearning to break away from the ordinary, being a scuba diving instructor could be a great option for you.

There are institutes and organisations in India which offer professional training programs. Prior to joining a course at any of the institutions, you would need to undergo medical checkups to test your current overall physical condition specifically to ensure that you have no complaints related to; asthma, dysentery, dehydration, sickness, head injury, back problem, spinal injury, diabetes and some others. Apart from these relative risk conditions, you have to pass temporary and severe risk condition tests. The other physical examinations vary across neurological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, orthopaedic, and a few others.

Although only few institutes offer courses in scuba diving, diving is catching up as a water sport and therefore the requirement for diving instructors is also on the rise. Some of the training institutes include:

  • DIVE India, Havelock and Neil Island, Andaman
  • Andaman Bubbles, Andaman
  • Temple Adventures, Puducherry
  • Dive Goa, Goa
  • Dive Andamans, Andaman

All these institutes have PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certified courses of varying duration and impart world class training.

If it provides you with some inspiration, let us inform you that Archana Sardana, a 38 year old housewife had qualified as the first Indian woman to become a Master Scuba Diving Trainer last year. Also, Madhu Kumar BM was India’s youngest scuba diving instructor at the age of 24, as of May 2009. Age is certainly no bar - all that counts is your enthusiasm.

The diving season in India starts in October and generally ends around May. So,if you are bored of sitting in office all day, looking forward to an exciting change of options and love water, scuba diving can certainly be an alternative for you to try out. You might take it up only on a part time basis during the peak season as well.
