Score 10% per subject, make it to IIT rank list

For the first time ever, students appearing for the Indian Institute of Technology- Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) will know exactly how much they need to score to make it to the rank list. In a decision taken by the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) on Tuesday, students will be 
 required to score at least 10% marks in three science  subjects — physics, chemistry and mathematics—in addition to scoring 35% marks overall to be in the common rank list.


Separate rank lists will be prepared for OBC, SC and ST categories.Candidates of OBC category need to score at least 9% in each subject and 31.5% in aggregate in order to be in the OBC rank list, while those in SC and ST categories must score at least 5% in each subject and 17.5% in aggregate.



For the physically disabled, the cut-off subject wise is 5% and 17.5% aggregate. Earlier, the cut-offs were decided only after the papers were checked.  An average score of each paper was worked out and that became the cut-off for each subject.



“The move has been made to take pressure off of students. Students keep fretting about the section that is the toughest, wasting his/her time in the process. The new policy will enable students to focus on their strengths after they are sure to have cracked questions worth 10% marks,” said GK Reddy, chairperson of the JAB.
