Reasons why Indian Universities Score Low in Global Rankings

Indian universities have yet again failed to fit in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings. None of the IITs have been able to bag global ranking, which indicates degradation in Indian education system. However, only two institutions could make it to the top 200 universities of the QS Rankings- Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore at 152 and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi at 185. There were four other IITs ranked under 400 top universities; however, none of the big universities like Delhi University could make it to this list.

Education in India needs a complete overhauling considering such a poor run in the global ratings despite boasting to have renowned institutions. Some of the major reasons for Indian universities losing the race are lack of competent teachers, poor showing and shortage of funds. Universities are ranked on the bases of two factors – number of foreign faculty and foreign students. Indian Universities lack on both fronts.

What needs to be done?

The need of Indian universities to be at the top global rankings is debatable. None of the universities have been able to win a high spot in the global ratings, which means our education system needs to improve its standards to stand out. On the other hand, parameters for global rankings are meant for western universities. These parameters may or may not be taking Indian institutes into consideration the way they would have been. Hence, low rankings.

The fact is Indian education system still needs a makeover from the ground level. While many global universities are buckling up to grab the top positions, we need to gear up for competing with such institutions on a larger scale.
