Maharashtra is all set to participate in International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 in order to enhance and improve the secondary education for students studying in the state schools. This survey is conducted once in three years and is designed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
About PISA
PISA is a test to determine where students compete with their peers from all over the world. It shows where these students stand amongst others in the world. It measures the performance of fifteen-year-old students in reading, mathematics and science. PISA also measures cross-curricular competencies like collaborative problem solving and judges the functional skills of a student. According to the PISA survey, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore are among the top four countries excelling on a global stage.
Nanda Kumar, Principal Secretary of the department in government resolution explained that the first step to prepare for PISA is to raise these scores in the next two years. If we succeed in PISA, it will be give a new direction to shape India’s education policies.
Maharashtra has a long way to go if it wishes to participate in such surveys. Last year, according to reports, in the national achievement survey conducted by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), students lagged behind their ICSE and CBSE counterparts in all the subjects. This calls for a better preparation before participating in PISA 2022.
It will be interesting to see where we stand among other countries with Maharashtra’s participation in 2022.
