Panjab University Aims to Acquire World-Class University Status

Panjab University (PU) has put in its application with the HRD ministry in order to acquire world-class university status. To achieve this aim, the internal quality assurance cell (IQAC) of the Panjab University drafted a report of the visions and prospective plans of the PU to make it achieve its targets.

The university’s ‘Vision 2020’ document lists ‘Promotion of quality education at affordable prices’ at the top. Following this is the aim to strengthen research, promote quality and relevant research in the society, economy, polity, etc. In addition to this, the aim is also to groom and educate students not only as per the demands in the market, but also in accordance to the Indian value system, culture practises, etc.

The focus is also to increase the achievements in the basic sciences where the Panjab University has already gained national and international fame.
The HRD Ministry, along with the HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, will recognise 10 public and private higher educational institutions and develop them as world-class institutions.

The aspects that the HRD ministry will look for are; adequate infrastructure, faculty, research work and academic relations at the international level.
The universities, which are still to be recognised will be receiving an amount of Rs. 1,000/- crores every year for five years by an international agency, said a member of the IQAC.

PU has in place some very determined plans to maintain its leadership position, and to keep itself at par with the changes in the teaching and learning areas.

It has mooted to create ten graduate schools with relevant categorisations to re-organise and reform the academic organisation of the current teaching departments into graduate school- research institute binaries.

Every graduate school is going to offer a variety of courses that students can choose from, as per their interests, passions and talents.
