For the first time, the Union Public Service Commission Preliminary Examination for the Civil Services was held at the Fort City of Vellore on Sunday, August 23rd, 2015 with 837 aspirants for the Civil Services from Vellore and neighbouring districts appearing to take the examination held in 6 centres in the city.
A total of 1,938 candidates had registered for the examinations. Out of those registered, 837 candidates took Paper I examination and 806 students took Paper II examination, representing a little over 43 percent turnout for Paper I and a little over 41 percent turnout for Paper II.
The examination centres were:
- E V R Nagammai Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Kosapet
- Muthurangam Government Arts College at Bagyam
- Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology at Thorapadi
- D K M College for Women at Sankaranpalayam
- N Krishnasamy Mudaliar higher Secondary Secondary School at Sainathapuram
- The special centre for differently-abled candidates at Voorhees College in Anna Salai

32 year-old K V Samikannu of Kasinaickanpatti village near Tirupattur was one of the two differently-abled persons who appeared for the exam. "This is the third time, I am appearing for the examination. On the two previous occasions, I took the examinations in Chennai. It is helpful now as the centre is in Vellore itself," said Samikannu, a PG Assistant teacher in the Government Higher Secondary School in Vishamangalam.
He has a 60 percent visual disability and he wrote the examination with the help of a scribe. Though he was not satisfied with his performance, he was determined to achieve his goal to be a civil servant. "I will never give up and work hard to clear the exams," he said.
Officials claimed they had arranged all basic amenities for the candidates including bus services for the candidates.
