The first of Delhi University (DU) registrations saw a dip in the overall number of online applications. The fact that online registration is fast, easy, economical and can be done from the comfort of your home was downplayed by students who thronged to the university campuses in spite of the scorching Delhi summer heat.
According to the Dean of student’s welfare office, just 5500 registrations were recorded on June 5, 2013 as opposed to 18, 000 online registrations in 2012. This despite the fact that the online process has been opened for SC/ST and PWD candidates from this academic session and they can apply for free.
The drop in online registration can be attributed to a number of causes:
- Non responsive DU website: Many students were unable to access the online registration form. Those who could, and made the payment, did not get any acknowledgement slip. The website is also plagued by bugs with regard to the payment process.
- Obscure eligibility criteria: Students were left guessing the eligibility criteria for online registration process for admission to DU. No guideline or instruction was available anywhere.
- Inaccessibility to online payment options: Many students do not have online payment options viz., credit/ debit cards.
- Unawareness: perhaps the online registration process facility has not been promoted properly by DU as many students who turned up at the university centres claimed that they got to know about the online registration process upon reaching the venue.
Whether it is the faulty website or inability on the student’s part to register online, a common consensus was that there was a trust deficit with respect to the online registration process. This in spite the fact that these days, almost everything is online, be it entrance exams, mock test papers, classes, tutorials and even projects! In the face of such a situation, are students, the future of India, apprehensive of the online medium?
That is something we are yet to see.
