The University of Delhi and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will, for the first time in the country, integrate skill- based training as part of the graduation curriculum in the Indian higher education space.

Under this MoU, 67 colleges of University of Delhi will offer graduate students skill-based training as a part of applied courses in the regular curriculum. This training will impact approximately 60,000 students who are being admitted each year for study under the four-year UG programme (FYUP).

The landmark MoU was signed by Alka Sharma, registrar, University of Delhi and Dilip Chenoy, managing director and CEO, NSDC.

These courses will be introduced to the second year FYUP students in 2014-15 and subsequently will be offered to both second and third year FYUP students. Professor Dinesh Singh, vice chancellor of University of Delhi is happy that these courses have been added to FYUP. He adds that they will be based on national occupational standards created by sector skill councils set up by NSDC. He further says that these courses are expected to enhance the employability skills of the FYUP students.

Commenting on this partnership, Chenoy says, “The University of Delhi is one of the premier universities in the country known for its standards of education and research. NSDC is pleased and honoured to partner with DU in this initiative. This is a big opportunity for students who wish to supplement their theoretical knowledge with practical hands-on training that will improve their employability in the increasingly competitive job market in the country.”

The students will be given a choice to select any one skill-based course from the identified sectors in addition to the regular academic subjects. This course will be a part of the applied course offered to the students and will be integrated into the timetable of the participating colleges.
