The National Eligibility Test (NET) which is conducted to test the basic eligibility for college/university lectureship will be done so, by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from this year onwards. NET has earlier been conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC). The entrance is conducted twice the year round.
The responsibility of conducting the entrance was transferred from UGC to CBSE, on grounds of it not being able to conduct the exam smoothly.
With this addition made to its list of exams, CBSE has become the nation’s largest educational body to be conducting exams. The total number of candidates taking the exams conducted by CBSE has been increased to more than sixty five lakhs from around sixty three lacks due to NET being added to this list.
CBSE is also responsible for many other national examinations such as; Class X & XII board exams, Class X proficiency test, Pre-Medical Entrance Test, Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE) (mains) and also Central Teachers Eligibility Test apart from the newly added NET.
From the year 2013, December entrance of NET, there has been an increase by 25% in the number of candidates who had taken the test in June this year.
