University of Allahabad organized a two day National seminar on “State, Marginality and Empowerment” from April 30 to May 1, 2015.
Seminar theme:
Post WWII many colonial nations attained independence. In a bid to accelerate development many a countries tried to replicate the western growth models. Development programs and policies were put into place which might have resulted in a disparity in social, economic and political growth among various population strata.
These circumstances have eventually led to the eroding importance of welfare development, giving more importance to acquired primacy. There is a growing concern of power relations between the less privileged and power exercisers. During the regime of Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, efforts were made to bridge the gap and improve the proportion of marginalized and weaker sections of the societies. This was done through the introduction of programs like - micro-finance and SHPGs for women, right to education, skill development, health facilities to those who are excluded from such services and other life chances. Besides these, other associations like SHGs and NGOs also empowered the SC, ST, OBC and minority classes of the society.
In the light of these arguments the seminar makes concerted endeavour to comprehend the dynamics of Indian state in relation to marginality and empowerment and the role of mobilization of marginalized in the formulation of policies and their implementation in the empowerment of marginalized.
Sub-themes of the seminar are:
- Theoretical issues on State, Marginality and empowerment
- State policies and Empowerment of marginalized - education, health, employment etc
- Empowerment of Women: Social, Economical and Political
- Empowerment of the marginalized: Skill Development and Vocational Training and Self-employment
- Right to Education Vs Empowering the marginalized
- Self Help Groups (SHGs) and empowerment of women

- Civil society and empowerment of weaker sections of society
