My year with Austen

You know that feeling when you want something to happen but know that it is just wistful thinking and shove the thought into the deepest quarters of your ‘mind palace’.

Well that was me some time back. Being a hopeless romantic at heart, I would dream about being transported back in time to the Victorian England of tea, chivalry and Jane Austen. I pictured myself walking in the majestic hallways of Pemberley.  I’d imagine breathing in the regal scents that pervaded the numerous galas where people ate and drank all day and did little else. You get the picture.

Imagine my surprise when last week, in one of my fantasy flights, I stumbled upon a rather striking co-relation between my life and that of my favorite fictional character- Elizabeth Bennett.

It appears that for the past two years I have been living a rather remarkable rendition of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Here goes.. When I took up science I had my prejudice. Science kids were nerds, geeks, not into fun stuff and certainly not into chick lit. (Don’t look at me like that, I overcame the prejudice alright!). And science had its pride. It was all high strung and unrelenting. We were constantly at loggerheads. Science trying to show me down (marks!) and me trying to get one up on it (good marks!). It went on for what now seems an eternity.

But eventually like in all good romances, we fell for each other (actually my marks rose, but that’s sort of beside the point). And I scored a respectable 96.5% in the Boards. I am now looking for my happily ever after…

Now guys, how is that for a train of thought ?! And I’m sure if you look hard enough (just a manner of speaking, its actually quite out there) you too will find your story.
