MHRD to Bring Lectures from Six IITs Direct to Home

In a move that can rightly be called a paradigm shift the way education system functions in India, Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) will telecast lectures from six IITs directly to homes. MHRD is to launch 32 Direct-to-Home channels as a result of which students across the country would be able to attend classes from the convenience of their homes.

The good news is Department of Space has agreed to allot two transponders on a GSAT series satellite for this ambitious project that is aimed to make lectures live on DTH and enable students not to miss even a single lecture of their course. Further, MoUs have been already signed with many institutions who agreed to provide lessons and content that will be telecasted on these channels.

What makes this project an ambitious one and a move that will herald a new era in Indian education system is that the use of space technology will expand the reach of quality education at higher level other than making it easily available and accessible to a lot of students. With this, the quality of higher education is expected to get a greater boost. The channels are, as per MHRD, expected to be on air in a couple of months.

By launching 32 DTH channels, the government of India aims to transmit classrooms in 10 ‘Teaching Ends’ wherein six will be based in IITs: Guwahati, Kanpur Chennai, Kharagpur, Delhi and Mumbai. In addition to this, lectures from more than a dozen other premier institutes will also be transmitted on TV and the process to finalize the names is on.

These channels will be available free of cost on Doordarshan’s FreeDish DTH platform and all that students need is just the set top box to receive them at their home.
