The Maharashtra government has decided to conduct its own entrance test (CET) for admission to MBA/ MMS courses from the next academic session 2014-15.
This year, admissions to these courses were done on the basis of Common Management Admission Test (CMAT), which is carried out by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), instead of the CET.
However, the decision to go back to MH-CET has been taken after Maharashtra witnessed a 50 per cent decline in MBA admissions this year.
The state government’s Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) is planning to go back to CET due to lack of awareness among students about the national-level CMAT exam.
"The entire process for CMAT is done online. Students in rural areas are hesitant about the online process and exams. There has been a dip in the number of applicants this year and therefore, the number of vacancies in colleges has risen," a director of a management college told a leading daily.
Around 20,000 students applied for MBA/ MMS courses this year, which is less than half of last year's 42,490 applicants.
Dayanand Meshram, joint director, said, "While 20% seats will be with the management, the 15% all-India quota seats can be filled by colleges using scores of CMAT, CAT, XAT, MAT or any other national-level MBA entrance exams."
The remaining 65% seats under the state quota will be filled basis the MH-CET scores for MBA/MMS admissions from the academic year 2014-15, According to an official notification on the website of DTE.
