Madhya Pradesh May Introduce Dress Code in Colleges

Students pursuing undergraduate courses in Madhya Pradesh may soon have to follow a dress code, according to the state government’s new plan.

Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya, Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister, recently said that dress code brings uniformity among students and therefore it should be implemented  for the undergraduate students in the state aided colleges.

Pawaiya talked about the state-wide dress code plan at the National Services Scheme (NSS) on Sunday.

Principal Secretary of Higher Education Department Ashish Upadhyaya said that there could be a dress code for all the undergraduate students and the Janbhagidari Samiti will hold a meeting to decide the matter duly.

Janbhagidari Samiti is an organisation that represents public in the colleges and extends help to colleges in getting grants and financial aides.
Some students have welcomed the proposal but student union bodies say that imposing a dress code on students would be a diktat. 

Mayank Yadav, a B. Com student, welcomed the dress code and said, "Dress code will be a good decision as it will end all kind of differences among students in colleges. Sometimes, an inferiority complex develops among students from weaker background because of clothes. I would be very happy if the dress code is implemented in colleges.”

However, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Bhopal District division, Harsh Chandel expressed his concern over the idea of imposing dress code in colleges citing, "Students should be given the freedom to wear clothes of their choice and the final decision should be taken with the assent of the students"

"Before implementation, student voices should be heard by the higher education department. The government is unnecessarily trying to take control of things by implementing such rules," said Vivek Triptahi, spokesperson of NSUI, as reported to HT.
