A hub of engineering, Pune University has taken steps to improve the quality of engineering courses offered by it. University of Pune (UoP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Fachshule fur Luftfahrzeugfuhrer (FFL), one of Germany’s pilot & flight training school. According to the agreement, University of Pune will launch a launch a two-year M Tech (Aviation) course with FLL beginning September 1, 2013.

Eligibility criteria for M. Tech Aviation in Pune

  • B. Tech degree in engineering or technology branch

Note – Students will study for this course under UoP's Department of Technology for the first six months. The remaining three semesters will include onsite training at the FFL facilities in Germany. The students will also get a European flying license by German aviation regulator LBA.

What happens after the course?

Pune University will award the M. Tech Aviation degree and students returning to India after their onsite training will have to take the probe tests conducted by Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This will earn the students an Indian license (for flying) and also operate in the Asia Pacific regions, besides Europe.

Officials are looking at this venture as something bigger than just a pilot training course. They maintain that the course will also educate the students on engineering aspects and ensure job opportunities in flying as well as ground engineering and allied services as the pass outs will be highly qualified engineers.

Students will also have to undergo extensive 800 hours of flying exercises during their onsite activity.

Fees for M. Tech Aviation by Pune University

  • Euro 70,000 (around Rs 55 lakh) for the two-years

which will include flying license, medical and related expenses. Expenses for travelling to Germany and back and accommodation will have to be borne by the students separately.

The course will also focus a lot on ground studies, soft skills, communication and team building activities. With the growth in global tourism and aviation industry, the demand for trained pilots may grow immensely in the next decade.

Students interested in pursuing this course will get visas, work permit etc by the German Embassy in New Delhi.
