The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is about to commence the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for Bachelors of Architecture (BArch).
The JEE Main BArch Examination is for those candidates who aspire in the field of Architecture. It measures the aptitude of the applicant with regard to the specific field of architecture. The test measures a candidates drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking ability, which have been acquired over a long period of time, and that are related to the study of architecture.
The JEE (BArch) examination is scheduled to be conducted on April 4, 2015. However, students who were unable to register themselves for the exam can start enrolling for the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA).
NATA is conducted by the Council of Architecture (COA) for admission to the 5 year BArch Degree course at all recognized institutions across the country. Admission to all architecture colleges (including government and private deemed universities) in India is done on the basis of NATA score.
Students from science/commerce stream with math can seek admission to the BArch course. However, there are no questions from Physics, Chemistry, or General Knowledge in the architecture entrance examinations of JEE (BArch) and NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture).
Jamia Millia Islamia conducts its own entrance exam for admission in architecture. They ask questions from Physics, Chemistry, Math, English and General Knowledge. There are some state exams which follow this pattern for the architecture entrance.
Approximately, there are 387 schools offering a five-year BArch degree course in the country and admission to the course in all schools of architecture is compulsorily through aptitude tests.
A large number of students are under the impression that they can get admission on the basis of the JEE architecture entrance exam conducted by CBSE. But very few colleges accept the JEE score. Most self-financing and architecture colleges and schools in India accept only NATA score. Without clearing the NATA exam you cannot get admission in these colleges.
The JEE BArch has three significant parts. Part 1 comprises of mathematical questions. Basic class 12th level mathematical questions can be found in this part of the paper. Part 2 is basically aptitude test on general awareness topics. Analytical reasoning, logical skills and general ideas about architectural science will be tested through this part of the examination. Finally comes the part 3, which primarily consists of questions related to drawing and sketching. General perception about 2D and 3D drawing will be tested through this phase. Total marks are 390. For every wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted.
NATA consists of two papers. Both are of three hours duration. Paper 1 is an online test that is held for an hour. It is for 100 marks. Paper 2 (drawing and sketching) is for 100 marks and is for two hours.
So aspiring architects can get the dices rolling!
