Placement trends has a direct impact of how economy fairs. We keep on hearing that job market is sluggish due to which there is a dearth of jobs in the corporate sector for freshers. As a faculty of a Management Institute it’s a cause of constant worry to me. But what we hear may not be the complete truth. No doubt there is a slowdown in the conventional job areas such as Sales and Marketing of Financial Services, FMCG, Electronics and regular HR Jobs still more number of students every year opt for Marketing and Finance as their specialization since it is taken for granted that these are very job oriented fields.

In the past we have witnessed general market acceptance of such specializations. But Market and specially job market is highly dynamic in nature and the demand keeps on changing from time to time. Most of the management institutes are still supplying professionally qualified students which are now ‘Un-Employable’ in corporate world. This has created a huge Demand and Supply gap between the Industry and the Academia.

There is no dearth of good job openings in Industry and recruitments heads are in look out for suitable candidates everywhere. No wonder we often see a line written in most of the job openings which states that, “Salary is not the constraints for suitable candidate.” This clearly shows that head hunters are not going to hire any professionally qualified person who comes and applies. Because of this the word spreads that there are Less/No jobs openings and market is slow.

There is always a silver lining in the darkest of the cloud witnessed. The management institutes which understand the industry requirement and then design their course curriculum tend to create not only professionally qualified people but also corporate ready. At Jaipuria Institute of Management Studies, Indirapuram Ghaziabad, we have seen a major shift in sectorial placements compared with trends of previous year. This year at our campus lot of Consulting companies, Business Research firms, Real estate giants, and Digital Marketing / Social Media Marketing companies are coming for recruitments. Students are getting hired for lot of financial service markets and Commodity markets apart from the usual Banking jobs. Retail marketing and store operations have also become a good source of placements and internships.

It is important for every Management Institute to upgrade and redesign the curriculum from time to time to be in sync with the ever changing industry requirements. Moreover At Jaipuria Institute of Management Studies, Indirapuram Ghaziabad, we impart three important skills to make our PGDM students corporate ready:

  • Domain knowledge and understanding of a particular sector/industry
  • Various types of Sills required for that particular sector/industry [i.e. Negotiation skills, communication skills, presentation skills, inter-personnel skills, leadership skills, research skills etc.]
  • Mind set to work and survive, eventually excel in a particular sector/industry

While designing the course curriculum at Jaipuria Institute of Management Studies, Indirapuram Ghaziabad, we invite HR-Heads of various companies from diverse sectors/industries for their inputs. This way we get to know the requirement of various companies in terms of what kind of jobs are to be filled in the coming year. Regular guest lectures are held from the experts of industry who come and interact with the students and solve their specific sector related queries. Apart from that we run a dedicated ELP – Executive Leadership Program for our PGDM students. This a small step taken to bridge the Demand & Supply gap between Industry & Academia to ensure that students are not only qualified but also employable at the same time.
