Justice Gorla Rohini is New Delhi High Court’s first woman Chief Justice

For the first time ever in the history of the capital of India, a woman has been selected as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Gorla Rohini was the senior most judges at the Andhra Pradesh High Court before being nominated as the Chief Justice. She said, “I am very privileged to come here as the first woman Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. I think the discrimination on the basis of gender is not a new talk in our country or in the world.” With her swearing-in ceremony, the count of Delhi women judges in Delhi has risen to 10. The total number of judges in Delhi is 40 at present.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung administered the oath of office to Justice Rohini. According to reports, he is said to have recommended her for the post. He is of the opinion that her appointment symbolizes women’s empowerment and there is a need for many more role models like her, who can inspire young girls across the country to aspire for top positions in all walks of life.

Justice Rohini originally hails from Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and has completed her Bachelor Degree in Science at Osmania University and Law at Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam. She has worked as an advocate, has taken issues like protection of the girl child and working women, has been involved in legal journalism as a reporter and executive editor of Andhra Pradesh Law Journals previously.
 

Eligibility Criteria to be appointed as a High Court Judge

• Candidates should appear for the State Judicial Services Exam held by individual state governments
• Candidate should be 45 years of age
• Candidates must have must have served a legal office in India for not less than 10 years
• Lawyers who have practiced in a High Court can also apply
• Applications need to be sent to the Register General of the respective courts
