The naval wing of the Indian armed forces, which has been striving for better technology when it comes to acquiring warships, is now ensuring that its officers should be able to handle all that technology. Initially, while the Navy was ensuring that almost all officers have B.Tech degrees, it will now shortlist candidates not on their PCM percentage in Class 12th, but on their performance in JEE (Main).

The move could also be due to the fact that different examination boards in the country have different marking standards and hence the Navy would be getting an uneven quality of aspirants having the same PCM percentage in their Class 12th examinations. On the other hand, JEE (Main) ranks are standardised and will obviously prove to be a better benchmark.

The Navy states that CBSE has agreed to share JEE (Main) ranks with them and aspiring candidates who want to be eligible for the January 2022 session at INA might have to appear for JEE (Main) next year. With the modernization of fleet going on for a few years, the first entry batch of B.Tech officers did pass out from the Indian Naval Academy in May 2013.

The armed force has since then been making changes to its three officer entry schemes, which includes cadets who first pursue a three-year course at NDA followed by a year at the INA to complete their B.Tech degrees. Secondly, there are cadets who join the INA for a complete 4-year B.Tech program and the third entry point is where cadets will now be recruited based on their performance in JEE (Main), instead of their performance in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12th.
