JEE Main for Engineering Aspirants
If you have always dreamt of getting admission in one of the top engineering and technology institutions in India, then JEE Main is the exam that can realise your dreams of becoming a brilliant engineer or tech professional. JEE refers to the Joint Entrance Examination, which is a national-level engineering and architecture exam that is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) every year. The exam assesses your ability and aptitude to pursue an engineering or technology course after you complete class 12th from a recognised board in the country.
Where Can You Get Admission after Qualifying JEE Main
Various participating institutions offer admission to engineering aspirants based on their score in JEE Mains, as well as the institute’s cut-off marks. For instance, you can get admission in a good government-funded technical institution (GFTI) if you meet the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs. Qualifying in JEE Main can make you eligible for admission in varied types of engineering colleges. These include the top colleges of India, such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs).
There are 31 NITs, 20 IIITs and 19 GFTIs that participate in JEE Main. Ranging from government colleges and private institutions to government-aided colleges that offer courses in engineering, technology and architecture, you can join any of the institutions that you are eligible for. It is not that you must meet the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs, NITs or IIITs, but you can also go for other non-participating colleges that accept JEE Main scores to admit students in their engineering programmes. On the other hand, you can go for IITs after qualifying the next level of JEE Main exam, which is JEE Advanced.
GFTI Admissions Based on JEE Main
If you feel that you will not be able to meet the cut-offs for IITs or NITs, then a good option is to aim at the best of GFTIs. These wonderful technical institutions receive funding from the central or state governments. CBSE conducts JEE Main every year and later releases the exam cut-off based on several factors, such as the complexity of the exam, the number of students taking the exam, the categories of students (General, SC, ST, OBC, Others), performance of students in the exam, etc. If you score above this cut-off and meet the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs, then you can get a seat allocated at one of the participating GFTIs during the JEE Main counselling and seat allotment process.
The List of Top GFTIs with Cut-offs
Every good GFTI participating in the process of admission through JEE Main can admit you in the desired undergraduate engineering programme, provided you meet the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs. While there are 19 participating GFTIs, you should aim for the best of these. We are providing you with a list of these top GFTIs, as well as their cut-offs or closing ranks for admission, so you may assess your preparation for JEE Main 2022 exam if you are going to appear for it.
With the details of these closing ranks, you will also be able to determine the level at which you must perform if you have to reach the points of JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs. Check out the following listing of the best of GFTIs and their cut-offs for general category. These cut-offs are usually set by institutions based on the overall performance of students appearing in JEE Main for a specific year. As the cut-offs for the year 2022 will only be available after exam results are declared, we are providing you with the previous year’s cut-offs to gauge the hard work you may need to do in the 2022 exam.

While the given list offers the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs, it does not refer to the cut-off for a specific branch of engineering. There are separate cut-offs for each branch that are more likely to be below the college cut-offs. If you are not sure of the way you would get a seat allocated in one of these GFTIs, then let us tell you about the process of counselling and seat allocation.
Counselling and Seat Allotment for GFTIs
The process of counselling and seat allotment for GFTIs is similar to all the other participating institutes. In fact, there is a common process of counselling that is undertaken by JoSAA or the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, which has been set up by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. JoSAA adopts the following procedure for admissions in engineering and architecture courses in all participating institutes.
Candidate registration: If you have cleared the JEE Main cut-off declared by CBSE, then you are eligible to get admission in any participating college. You will have to register on the official website and submit a form to become a part of counselling.
Providing college and course choices: You will further need to give your preferences of colleges and courses that are on your priority. This has to be done while filling the registration form. JoSAA will consider the same while allocating a seat to you. If you are aiming to meet the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs, then you should choose these GFTIs as your college choices.
Seat allotment: JoSAA holds six rounds of counselling and selects the most suitable college and course according to your desired options and several other factors. If you have given GFTIs as your choices, then it will also consider the JEE Main cut-off for top GFTIs. If you meet the cut-offs, you may get a seat in one of these prestigious institutions. However, it should be noted that usually, students who may not secure seats in other top colleges like NITs and IIITs choose GFTIs. Finally, you need to pay your fee to accept the allocated seat and join the institution.
