Come April and the countdown to the country’s toughest engineering exam – JEE, will begin! Lakhs of engineering aspirants across India compete for seats at IITs, NITs, etc. every year, thus making JEE the most popular engineering entrance examination.
Over the past few years, the JEE pattern has experienced a number of changes. JEE was introduced as a two-phase examination in 2013 (JEE Mains and JEE Advanced) after replacing the two previous tests: All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).
The JEE-Main exam is conducted for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). The JEE-Advanced exam, on the other hand, is taken by engineering aspirants for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) as well as IIT (ISM), Dhanbad.
Apart from this, there are many other education institutes that offer engineering courses such as the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) that offer admission to students based on JEE Advanced ranks.
JEE Main 2022:
The JEE Main exam consists of Paper-1, which is conducted in both online and offline modes for admission in B.E./B.Tech courses, and Paper-2, which is conducted offline only for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses. Both papers contain multiple-choice questions and aspirants may opt for either or both of them.
While JEE Main 2022 Paper & Pen-based exam is scheduled to be conducted on April 2, 2022, the Computer Based Test (CBT) will be held on April 8 and April 9, 2022.

Last year, the top 2 lakh candidates who qualified JEE Mains 2022 appeared for JEE Advanced 2022, which is the second and the most important stage in determining an aspirant’s entry into the IITs.
Similarly, this year too, CBSE will filter the top 2,20,000 candidates who would’ve qualified JEE Mains 2022 to become eligible for JEE Advanced 2022.
Candidates who wish to study in India’s prestigious engineering colleges like IITs and ISM, Dhanbad must keep in mind that getting an excellent JEE Advanced score will be the gateway to their dream college.
However, those who manage to clear JEE Mains but fail to qualify for JEE-Advanced need not worry as they would still have the option of applying in other engineering colleges like the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), and other government and/or privately-owned engineering colleges.
JEE Advanced 2022:
The JEE Advanced exam consists of two papers – Paper 1, which will be held from 09:00 IST to 12:00 IST and Paper 2, which will be conducted from 14:00 IST to 17:00 IST). Both the papers are compulsory and the time duration for each paper is three hours.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will conduct the examination on 21st May 2022. The JEE Advanced 2022 exam will be held under the supervision of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
The top 2,20,000 candidates (including all categories) who score positive marks in Paper-1 of JEE (Main) 2022 would be eligible to take the JEE Advanced 2022 exam.
Candidates who appeared for JEE (Advanced) for the first time last year are eligible to attempt JEE (Advanced) this year as well. A candidate is basically allowed a maximum of two attempts in consecutive years.
The candidates’ admission to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programs (entry at the 10+2 level) in the IITs will be based on their performance in this examination.

Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) 2022:
Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) 2022 is an exam that can only be taken by candidates who have qualified JEE Main 2022 and JEE Advanced 2022. It is conducted for students who wish to take admission in the 5 years undergraduate B.Arch course at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). However, candidates may note that B. Arch. programme is available at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee only.
The registration process for AAT 2022 will begin on the day of the announcement of JEE Advanced result 2022, which is 11th June 2022. Since the registration window for AAT is short, the last date to register for AAT 2022 is 12th June 2022. The exam will be conducted on 14th June 2022 only at the seven zonal coordinating IITs.
The results for AAT will be declared on 18th June 2022.

Joint Seat Allocation:
- The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for allocating seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs).
- JoSAA will announce the important dates for the joint seat allocation process 2022 separately.
- The seat allocation authority will also release the detailed instructions for filling in the choices and the seat allotment procedure through Seat Allotment Brochure. All the eligible candidates who wish to take admission will have to take part in the joint seat allocation process by filling in their choices of the courses.
- At the time of online filling-in of choices, IITs will offer the list of courses for admission for the academic year 2022-18.
- Note: A candidate’s admission in IIT is not only based on his/her performance in JEE Advanced (2022) or filling up choices but also on the availability of seats during various rounds of joint seat allocation process.
What’s New?
In April 2022, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India decided to introduce two changes in the JEE pattern for 2022.
- Class 12th marks will not be considered for determining JEE (Main) All India Ranks (AIR) for admission to undergraduate engineering courses from this year. Class 12 marks will be an important factor only for determining the eligibility criteria for the exam and it will have no weight age in calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main) examination. Until last year, the JEE Mains All India Ranks were calculated on the basis of JEE Main scores and normalised marks of Class 12th in a 60:40 ratio.
- It would be mandatory for General category candidates to have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination in order to qualify for admission in the IITs/NITs/IIITs and such other CFTIs were admissions are offered based on the JEE (Advanced)/JEE(Main) ranks. The qualifying marks for candidates in the SC/ST category would be 65%.
The Dream:
A student’s journey from being an engineering aspirant to finally becoming an engineer is not an easy one. It involves years of hard work, perseverance and focus, especially when it is about cracking one of the toughest engineering exams in India. While JEE is just the first step, there are many more steps that one needs to take in order to enter India’s top engineering colleges. As for those who do not qualify in JEE, there is no dearth of options. India is home to a large number of private engineering colleges where students can continue to pursue their dream.
