Moving a step closer to PM Modi’s Digital India initiative, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) recently hosted a regional training workshop conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC), to emphasize on the benefits of National Academic Depository (NAD).
Launched by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar on September 9, 2022, NAD aims to bring in transparency with establishment of digital depositories across universities allowing students to access their educational documents including mark sheets, certificates, etc digitally.
Speaking on the inaugural session of the workshop, Joint Secretary of UGC, Mamta R Agarwal said, “Academic awards are to be stored in digital depositary exactly like shares allowing students to access their certificates 24x7. “ He also added that NAD would benefit all stakeholders including universities and students.
Calling it ‘important’ for India, Vice Chancellor of JMI Professor Talat Ahmad said, “The digitalized process will help students to access their degrees without hassle. We know it is going to be very useful to students and turn out to be a foolproof system.”
Ahmad also emphasized on the fact that it will reduce the piles of degrees and overcrowding of files, making it a ‘much-needed’ development for our country.
Based on the lines of securities depositaries, NAD would help in validating the authenticity, safe storage and easy online retrieval of a student’s awards and certificates. It will also help eliminate fraudulent practices including forging of mark sheets and certificates.
MD & CEO of Central Depositary Services Limited PS Reddy and EVP of National Securities Depositary Limited Samar Banwat also spoke in the workshop.
