Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in Top 500 Global Ranking

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore is the only Indian institution to have made it to the top 500 in the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The 104-year-old entity has been placed in the 301-400 category.

The ranking was released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, reports a leading daily.

In the year 2012, IISc landed the 45th spot in the world ranking for Chemistry. However, this time the institution is on the 43rd position.

Harvard University has topped the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Stanford University has landed the second spot while University of California, Berkeley is on the third position.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Cambridge University came fourth and fifth respectively.

In order to rank world universities, ARWU uses six objective indicators, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

Ever year, ARWU ranks more than 1000 universities and the list of top 500 is released on the Internet.
