The recent Assocham report sited that developed countries has not slowed down spending on education, whereas India is spending only 3.83% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on education and this is increasing the gap for India to reach the global educational goals.

Notably, India is short of 6.89 lakhs of quality teachers at the primary school level. Kendriya Vidyalayas, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other Indian universities are facing a similar situation.

The Assocham report also suggested some dramatic changes in the country’s education system to improve educational quality. Also, spending mere 3.83% of total GDP is not enough to meet the pace of developed countries.

Notably, United Nations has recommended India to spend at least 6% of their GDP on education to match the global educational standard. Also, due to absence of focus on effective skill development, India is one of the least skilled countries.

Contrary to Indian educational system, US spends 5.22% of its GDP on education, Germany spends 4.95% while for UK it is 5.72%. If timely changes will not be made it will take almost six generations (126 years) to catch up with the global educational needs.
