5% Increase will Accommodate 528 More Aspirants to IITs from 2017 Onward

The news of IITs and IIMs increasing the intake of students has been doing the rounds of the web for quite sometimes now. In the latest developments, and as per the directive from MHRD, IITs will increase the intake of students by five percent from the academic session starting from 2022 onward. With this, around 528 more engineering aspirants will get a chance to be the part of IITs from next year.

The decision is expected to increase the number of student accommodation strength from current 10, 572 to 11,100 from the next academic session. The decision to increase the number of students to the IITs was taken at the meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) – the epic decision-making body of IIT JEE Advanced. All the IIT chairpersons attended the JAB meeting for the same.

The decision is the first step to increasing the total number of seats to 100,000 by 2020. However, in the recent past, most of the older IITs showed their unwillingness to increase the number of student intake citing the reason of being already too much stretched. The older IITs suggested that the student intake should be increased in the new IITs at first place.

Currently, IIT Kharagpur has the highest number of students at 1360, followed by IIT BHU at 1090 and IIT Roorkee at 1065. The older IITs have too little a space to increase the number of students. Therefore, the maximum number of students is to be increased by in newer IITs that include, but surely not limited to, IIT Patna, IIT Jammu, IIT Jodhpur and IIT Bhubaneshwar. The seat distribution isn’t clear as of now and will only be available once IITs give the numbers about their student intake capacity.
