IITs to Lower Cut-off for SC/ST, More Seats for Foreign Candidates

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will now have 10% additional seats for foreign students. The increase in seats will be done for various departments of the institute in addition to which the institute will now conduct their entrance exam at six international centres in place of just one. These six centres will be located at Ethiopia, UAE, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Singapore.

According to the officials of the institute, foreign students will now have to appear for the JEE Advanced exam and not for the JEE Main exam to seek admission in IIT. GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering will also be conducted in these six international centres for admission to the M.Tech courses offered at the IITs for foreign students.

Another important change that will take place is that the cut-off at all the IITs will be lowered for the SC/ST candidates. The cut-off has been reduced to 65% from 70% marks in class 12th. Furthermore, the candidates applying for JEE under the PWD category with dyslexia will now have to submit a certificate from a specialised doctor in association with RCI or Dyslexia Associations. It is important that the word 'severe' is mentioned in the certificate.

In an additional notification by the institute, the top 7 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will now be able to fix their fee structure on their own without the consent of their apex council. This fee autonomy for the IITs has been possible because of a project called 'Vishwajeet', which is working towards improving the global university ranking of the IITs. The fee structure autonomy will be final after a presentation done by all the seven IITs on October 20, 2022 in front of their board.
