M.Tech Eligibility
Application to IIT Kanpur M. Tech Admission (not applicable to PIO/NRI/foreign applicants) requires a valid GATE score. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering or must hold a master’s degree in science with minimum 55% marks or CPI of 5.5.
SC/ST candidates with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a master’s degree in science are eligible to apply for admission irrespective of marks/CPI.
How to Apply for M.Tech in IIT Kanpur
Candidates must register with the official website and fill the application form. Scanned documents must be in .jpg or .png format and should not exceed the maximum size of 600KB. Photographs and signatures must not exceed 40KB. Candidates will receive a reference number upon submission of the form, which should be preserved for future reference.

Students must submit the following documents along with the complete filled application form for IIT Kanpur M. Tech Admission –
• Birth certificate/class 10 certification for proof of DOB
• Applicable OBC/SC/ST certificate
• Applicable certificate of disability
• Copies of mark/grade sheet of qualification degree
• GATE/UGC/CSIR scorecard
• NOC from employer if students are employed during the time of admission
• If no photograph has been uploaded, students must attach a recent self-attested photo with the application reference number written on the back and staple it to a print-out of the admission form
• An application fee of INR 400 (General/OBC) and INR 200 (SC/ST/PD) must be paid through Demand Draft to The Registrar IIT Kanpur. Applicants must mention personal information on the reverse of the Demand Draft, such as name, reference number, address, etc.
Selection Process
The process of selection for IIT Kanpur M. Tech Admission candidates involves several stages as below –
Stage 1: Meet the eligibility criteria
Stage 2: Short-listing of candidates based on their GATE scores. In addition, candidates must have a master’s degree in science or a bachelor’s degree in engineering from AICTE-recognised university/institute, IIT or NIT.
Stage 3: Short-listed applicants will need to clear a written aptitude test. Those who meet the cut-off will qualify for a personal interview conducted by a committee-in-charge for M. Tech admissions. Evaluation will be based on academic proficiency, academic background, etc.
Stage 4: A merit list will be prepared based on the aggregate score, which will be calculated on the basis of valid GATE score. General/OBC/SC/ST applicants will be merit-listed separately. A committee-in-charge for PhD. admissions, IME Department, will decide the cutoffs for all categories. Approved reservation norms will be observed. Number of Seats
The number of seats for the IIT Kanpur M. Tech programme as of 2022 was 13 for general, 7 for OBC, 4 for SC, and 2 for ST. The number may change at the discretion of the institute.

Fee Structure
The fee structure for IIT Kanpur M. Tech Admission varies between student batches. Fee for 1st semester 2022-2022 for 2022 batch students is INR 45441; INR 35491 (hosteller) or INR 27192 (day scholar) for 2014 and 2015 batch students; and INR 34991(hosteller) or INR 27192 (day scholar) for 2013 and earlier batches.
Note: 2022 batch Students whose family income is less than INR 1 lakh p.a. will receive remission of two-thirds of the tuition fee.
2014 & 2015 batch: SC/ST students whose parent’s/guardian’s income is greater than INR 6 lakh p.a. are eligible for partial fee waiver and are
required to pay INR 10491 (hosteller), while those whose income is less than INR 6 lakh are required to pay INR 9241 (hosteller). On the other hand, Day scholars are required to pay INR 2192.
2013 & earlier batch: SC/ST students whose parent’s/guardian’s income is greater than INR 6 lakh p.a. are eligible for partial fee waiver and are required to pay INR 9991 (hosteller) while those whose income is less than INR 6 lakh are required to pay INR 9241 (hosteller).
