IIT-B Placements 2016: Lowest Number of Job Offers in Five Years

With the onset of the placement season from December in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), IIT-B has hit a new low this year, which is the worst in five years. The worst hit was for the students aspiring to get into finance and consulting firms. Coding and core engineering students remained unaffected, however, the number of US jobs have dropped.

After ten days of commencement of the placement season, the situation for IIT-B is just not getting any better. Since 2012, the number of offers made during placements has consistently been above 170; however, this year it has dropped to 150. This year, software-coding jobs, trading and core engineering sectors offered the highest packages. Despite startups like Paytm, Ola and Saavn making offers similar to last year, the numbers have gotten lower than ever.

The reasons for the drop in the number of placements are unknown yet. However, some of the following points can be considered as reasons for the fallout-

• Companies may have over-estimated their requirement last year, therefore, leading to cutting down on total offers this year.
• Some of the consulting companies are now hiring externally and not taking a route through campus placements to hire talent.
• The new IITs might be responsible for the drop in the number of placements.

IIT-B Placements 2022: Some Statistics

Companies that offered high packages last year have drastically cut-down their offers. Each of these top-notch companies has picked one or two students only. Oracle, Google, Samsung, Yahoo Japan offered packages between INR 20-35 Lakhs. While Japanese firms like Sony Murata and Sysmex Japan offered packages above INR 30 lakhs, startups like Paytm picked four students offering a package above INR 14 lakh. Ola cabs, that picked five students last year, has picked only two for a package of INR 18 lakh.
