A significant increase of 50% from 2012, IIM Calcutta witnesses an ascend in female intakes for the academic year of 2013-15. The total batch size across these three IIMs, based on acceptances till now, has risen from 1,220 to 1,247 this year.
Only 51 women made it into IIM-C in the year 2012. Before that, in 2011, the number was only 33.
Five branches of IIMs, namely:
- Calcutta
- Ahmedabad
- Bangalore
- Lucknow
- Indore
Settled on a unanimous decision on giving three marks extra to girls, hence increasing the count to 100 intakes per IIM branch. The only exceptions being IIM Ahmedabad, expecting only 80 girls.
A leading daily reports Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman and managing director of Biocon, saying: "The intake of more women in IIMs will certainly have a positive impact on gender diversity and on building women in leadership roles in corporate India. I do believe that business schools should ensure a minimum percentage of women enrolments and in that context affirmative enrolments are desirable."
