Health Ministry Approves Addition of 4000 PG Medical Seats

One of the important announcements made during the Union Budget 2022-18 by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was the addition of 5000 postgraduate medical seats every year. Out of this, 4000 PG medical seats have already been approved by the government and will be added in various medical colleges and hospitals across the country for the academic session 2022-2022.

The addition of these 4000 seats has taken the total number of PG medical seats to 35,117 in India. Also, close to 2,046 seats out of the 4000 will be added to the medical colleges alone.

This move is expected to improve the student-teacher ratio for clinical subjects in government medicine colleges. The Union Health Minister J P Nadda said that this move will strengthen tertiary care and improve the medical education in the country.

This initiative has already led to the creation of 1,137 extra seats in about 71 medical colleges across the nation. Another 1000+ seats are expected to be added by the end of March 2022, since many government colleges are still in the process of sending their proposals. In the last one year, there has been an increase of 2,147 seats in of Diplomate National Board (DNB).
