The last date for submission of GATE 2015 application was extended specially for students from the Jammu & Kashmir area due to the appeals made by the flood affected students.
IIT Kanpur the organizing institute for GATE 2015 decided to shift the deadline for submission of forms from September 30, 2014 to October 14, 2014 for the Jammu & Kashmir students owing to the conditions prevailing in those areas due to the floods that had caused much damage.

Lots of appeals were made to Smriti Irani, to shift the deadline for GATE 2015 as the students were finding it difficult to arrange the certificates and bank challans due to the floods. Smriti Irani had asked IIT Kanpur to consider these requests and extend the deadlines for students from the J&K Region.
The GATE score is used for post graduate admissions to programmes like M.E., M.Tech and Ph.D in Indian Institutes higher education with financial assistance provided by HRD Ministry and other government agencies. The scores are also used by public and private sector undertakings for employment screening purposes.
