The hashtag # feature is quite popular on rival websites such as Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and Facebook's own Instagram.
So, what is a hashtag '#'?
Hashtags are words prefixed by the symbol '#' used to collect all the conversation about some topic into a bucket. Most of the times trending topics on Twitter are hashtags which receive a chunk of attention and conversations. Like #coolage, #click4college, #manofsteel, #chennaiexpress etc.
Hashtags are extensively used for online marketing and promoters shell out heavy sums of money to get their hashtags in the trending topics on twitter.
Now that hashtags feature is active even in the friendly confines of Facebook, do expect most of the pages and companies asking you to follow their hashtags. The conversations would be splattered into the public space as people use more and more hashtags in Facebook to communicate with each other and with hashtags all these conversations will be kept decoratively in a collective box. It is an interesting point to note that pages can't use hashtags in their status messages!
Facebook will soon launch, exactly following the footsteps of Twitter, trending hashtags (hashtags to hashtags) feature using which you can find out the popular topics about which the world is talking. But for now only 20% of the users from India are getting to lay their hands on this new feature.
