Entrance Exam or No Entrance Exam; DU still in a flux

The month of April will soon end, but the Delhi University is yet to release any information on the admission process for its undergraduate courses.

The ones suffering most are students who want to pursue courses for which there have been entrance exams in the past.

Neither the university administration nor the department heads have spoken about conducting tests for courses such as Journalism, English, Management Studies and Elementary Education that have, for the past few years, admitted students on the basis of a test.

The exception was last year when tests for English and Journalism weren’t conducted due to lack of time.

“We have not heard anything from the university so far. In 2012, we started planning the entrance test in March itself. This year, it doesn’t seem likely that the test will be conducted. The confusion is massive and we are getting calls from various students asking whether there will be a test. We don’t have an answer yet,” said a teacher from the department of journalism who did not want to be named.

Journalism, along with English, was among the most popular subjects last year, attracting over 50,000 applications. English continued to be the most popular subjects with over 80,000 applicants.

The admission criteria for another immensely popular course, management studies, has also left students confused. An entrance exam was conducted for students who applied last year but, so far, there is no word on it.

“I have been going to coaching classes for the last two months to prepare myself for the entrance but there are no announcements so far. We don’t even know if there is going to be an exam at all. This is the most important time of our lives and there is no information at all,” said Sucheta Jha, an aspirant.

According to university officials, the committee that has been formed for admissions is looking at the proposals and changes suggested by principals of all DU colleges.

The first draft of the admission policy is expected to be finalized by the end of this week or next week.
