 I aspire to study English and this is for those who wish to pursue English as their major. A blog on English is always interesting, opening up a vista of thoughts and pushing you into the land of literature, fascinating you to any extent.

What you will be doing in English:

English Literature provides you with the opportunity of reading, analysing, critiquing and of course enjoying the works/pieces of many authors, poets and dramatists. Covering a wide area, it includes many interesting genres which will have you hooked to the text.

Basically, it helps to understand the various styles of writing. Yeah, Dickens, Wordsworth, Christie, all have their unique styles and it is always quite fascinating to comprehend how various authors write.

To stretch this out, you will be silting any book layer by layer; going carefully through every point, comprehending and analysing it.

Sounds appealing, eh?

Many have a wrong notion of what doing English would be for them.

English isn’t advantageous if you want to:

Improve your writing skills: No, English doesn’t polish your writing skills. You analyse literary pieces, but there is no such advantage to improving your writing skills.

Be an author: Doing English Literature doesn’t mean you become an author. Many science students pen down a book, it isn’t at all related to what degree you hold. Of course, you may learn how to write by analysing literary works.

English does provide the following advantages:

Improve your reading skills:  Beware! You are going read a lot of books. But yeah, it really improves your reading speed and you can complete more books in a week! Yay!

Your analysing power grows: Not everyone has the ability to analyse in an efficient manner. It comes with practice and this is what English Literature is all about.

Lastly, why should you study English?

If you hold an aptitude for reading, you are efficient in English and you don’t hold a grudge again theory, you are in. You have found the most suitable course for yourself.
