Engineering Colleges in Maharashtra with Vacant Seats May Lose AICTE Accreditation

To deal with the issue of seats lying vacant in engineering colleges in Maharashtra, the AICTE has released new rules for the current academic year, 2022-18. As per these new rules, colleges that have less than 30% admission of the total approved seats for 5 continuous years will be denied fresh approval by the AICTE.

The guideline in the new handbook states that the institutes with courses that have less than 30% admission intake for last 5 years and the current academic year, those courses will be closed from next year with the Council’s approval.

This decision of the Council has received mixed views from experts in the industry who are worried about the colleges, which are being given approval even after missing the mark by just few points.

As per Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director of DTE, all the colleges that have seats lying vacant cannot be considered under this new guideline. He expressed that, colleges which are on the border line will not be considered under this, as they must have less than 30% intake for 5 years continuously.

All the engineering colleges of Maharashtra have to comply with all the new AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) rules for the current academic year 2022-18, or else they may face penal actions. The guidelines state very clearly that any institution, which is running a course in technical education, if found in violation of any of the regulations/ Approval process Handbook (APH) 2022-18, will be held liable and may face penal action along with a fine, no admission, reduction in “Approved Intake”, approval withdrawal and/or criminal action by the Council against defaulting Trust/ Society/ Company/ Associated Individuals or the institution itself.
