Only a certain set of subjects will be treated as ‘academic’ subjects for admission in Delhi University. Other subjects that may be offered by different exam boards stand a chance of being treated as non-elective subjects.

For enrolment in a language course, a candidate who hasn’t studied that language for the qualifying exam will suffer a disadvantage of 5% in the best of four percentage, to be eligible for admission in the course. On the other hand, those who have studied that language for the qualifying exam may be granted an advantage of 2%. For seeking admission in economics, mathematics, statistics and commerce courses, the candidate must have studied mathematics at the qualifying exam level. In addition to this, any candidate applying for a BSc course must have a minimum of 50% in the mathematics qualifying examination to be eligible for admission. Music and physical education shall be treated as academic subjects only for admission to honours course in those two disciplines.

Wherever any board does not offer commerce, accountancy shall be treated as an equivalent to it. A second language can be considered as an elective subject only if the other language falls under the category of an elective course. In cases where the candidate has studied both elective and core in a given language at qualifying exam level, the core will be treated as a language. The elective can then be treated as an academic subject. The eligibility criteria for honours courses in English and Hindi, the candidate should have passed the respective language paper in class XII and the marks of which must be included in the best of four percentage calculations.
